“Northern Hospitality” is the latest release from D.O. Gibson.
The single is the first from D.O.’s forthcoming seventh album Seeds and Dominoes.
The inspiration for the song came from an event that the veteran rapper and business exec organized in Los Angeles during Grammy weekend. “The Grammy’s are a busy time. I thought the best way to see some of my friends would be to throw an afternoon party. Canadian’s are known for being friendly and hospitable so I came up with the term Northern Hospitality. When you come to an event that we put on, you are guaranteed to not only have a good time, but meet and connect with some great people,” says D.O.
The event was a success. With food catered by Masterchef finalist Kerry Prince and sounds provided from DJ Speed, the party hit its climax when the legendary pioneer of funk George Clinton walked in the building. “He told me that I reminded him of a young Cube. That was the greatest compliment I could have received.”
When he returned to Toronto, D.O. was quick to reach out to producer Andrew Triple A who quickly crafted the beat for the single.
“As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a fit. It was one of those songs that gets written and recorded in an hour or two.”
For D.O., the opening lyrics say it all:
“They usually think the wrong way, til they see the Blue Jay
Cap on my head then they say “Excuse me!”
“Whenever I travel, people mistake me for being American. That’s why you can find me wearing a hat that shows where I’m from – whether Blue Jays, Raptors, Canadians, or Saskatchewan Roughriders. I’ve got a lot of love for the states, but I’m proud to be Canadian.”
D.O. will spread the Northern Hospitality when he travels to Europe twice in the next two months. In May, he will be performing in the Netherlands at New Skool Rules in Rotterdam, and then in Amsterdam, D.O. will host a boat cruise followed by an album listening party at legendary Hip-Hop club Duivel. In June, he will return to the South of France to host a Northern Hospitality party during MIDEM at the famed Sun7 club.
